Turntable Animation – Die Fantastischen Vier
For the Longplayer Tour 2024, I created several turntable animations, including a 15-minute sequence rendered in 4K showing a turntable playing through a full record. A custom shader was built for the turntable itself, a new needle was modeled, and the strobe dots were animated precisely to the platter’s speed. At the end of the piece, the vinyl skips into a looping groove. Final files were delivered in Notch, the codec used for live playback on stage.
When late-stage style changes came in during rendering, a full re-render wasn’t the most efficient option with the time remaining — so VFX compositing techniques were used instead to integrate the new look directly into the existing render, delivering the updated result without reworking the full animation from scratch.
